The Question

He asked me to ask him a question…anything.

I asked where this urgency was coming from.

He asked if that was my question. I paused, wanting to ask if that was my only question but afraid it was. My mind raced. I told him yes, that was my question, secretly hoping he would say I could ask more questions.

He told me he didn’t know.

My heart whispered into my soul as if it were a lie detector test and told me that was a lie. His truth was buried alongside his pride and fear, none of which would build our fortification of a relationship.

After consultation with my heart and soul, my brain finally wired a telegraph to my lips to tell him that that wasn’t an acceptable answer and if that was his answer, there was no point in asking him any questions.

I could feel the wall tumbling down from the other side of phone. Over thousands miles away, I could feel him waver, his thoughts running around in his head like marathon runners.

The rustling of his thoughts settled, like the dew after rain. He answered “I want to tell you about myself.”

Finally.

But alas, I had too many questions and decided to ask them later.
